The current accountants licensing exemption allow Accountants to provide advice on the establishment of self managed superannuation funds (SMSF) without the need for authorisation under an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL). This exemption is removed from 1 July 2016.

What are your options?

At the end of the transition period, accountants must choose between the following options to continue to provide SMSF advice to their clients:

  • Apply for a limited AFSL
  • Become a representative of an existing AFSL
  • Refer SMSF advice to an authorised representative
  • Cease to provide SMSF advice
